Living in the Karoo, I suddenly found myself with a little more time on my hands.
I decided to use it to explore something that had always interested me — coffee.
At first, I knew very little about what happens before that familiar cup reaches the table. So I started learning.
Where does coffee come from?
How do you select good green beans?
What makes one coffee different from another?
Which roasting machine is right?
What actually happens to a green coffee bean when you roast it?
One question led to another.
I started exploring coffee origins, different types of beans, roasting methods and machines, and the process of taking a green coffee bean and turning it into roasted coffee.
Then came the next part of the journey — packaging, branding, marketing and, perhaps most importantly, listening to the people drinking the coffee.

But reading about coffee could only take me so far. I needed to roast it myself.
So I started with a hand roaster and worked through batch after batch, learning through trial and error.
Some roasts were better than others, but every batch taught me something.
Eventually, the idea became serious enough to invest in a double-drum coffee roaster.
That was another turning point. The little experiments were becoming something real.
For my first coffees, I went back to the two blends I had been testing and refining. They became the beginning of the Karoo Coffee Roasters range.
And who were the first customers? Family and friends.
They were the first people brave enough to taste the coffee, give their opinions and tell me what they thought.
Their feedback became part of the learning process and helped shape what Karoo Coffee Roasters would become.
Then, in June 2024, Karoo Coffee Roasters opened to the public.
What started with a little time on my hands, a hand roaster and a lot of questions had become a real coffee business.
And that is where the story begins.
Not with a big factory or a large team, but with curiosity, experimentation and a love for doing things properly.
From green beans to roasted coffee.
From the first batch to the first customer.
From family and friends to coffee lovers further afield.
And so, Karoo Coffee Roasters began.
The Karoo has a way of making you slow down.
There is space here.
Open veld.
Long roads.
Wide skies.
But there is also a silence that isn't really silence.
Listen closely and there are birds calling across the veld, the clicking chirps of tiny geckos at dusk, the wind moving through the grass and the distant sounds of farm life.
The air carries the smell of wild herbs, dry earth and warm dust.
In the morning, the light spreads slowly across the plains. At sunset, the landscape turns orange, gold and deep red.
And somewhere in between all of that, there is time to stop. To breathe. To be yourself.
That is what the Karoo means to me. And that is what I want you to experience in every cup of Karoo Coffee Roasters.
No retail shop. No busy coffee counter. No queue. Just the farm, the roaster, the coffee — and the Karoo, coming to you.
